Cybercriminals are rising to the occasion to come after users in different sites like Facebook. Their creativity at beating the common user is becoming complex and very tricky. IT support and security are key to protecting users from the malware and criminal threats that has the potential to take our identity and more headaches overall.

Trojan horses and viruses are both types of malware: software developed with the intent of harming your system. The chief difference between trojans and viruses is that viruses will seek to replicate themselves to other files whereas trojans don’t. A trojan is designed to appear as an innocent or desirable file, such as a video codec, when in fact it can damage systems and allow hackers access to your computer.

Facebook applications concealing malware are called rogue apps. Examples include the Dislike Button app and applications that purport to show which users are viewing a particular Facebook profile. Rogue apps can trick unwary users into downloading files which look innocuous but are in fact trojans or other malware. IT departments understand that this allows hackers to take control of the user’s Facebook account.

Special offers posted on Facebook are another way that scammers can infect your computer with a trojan horse. The scammer creates a post offering tempting free items such as rare Facebook game prizes or electronics. When a user tries to find out more by clicking the link, they may be taken to an attack site: a hacker-controlled website site which infects their computer with malware. Users may also be asked to play a game “to prove they are human,” which involves downloading a piece of software. This software may contain a trojan.
